Sophia Michelen
Researcher-in-Residence
Sophia is a fearless and passionate explorer and storyteller, bridging cultures through art, photojournalism, and documentary film, with a mission to document and share diverse human experiences.
Sophia is a dynamic storyteller and passionate explorer whose insatiable curiosity for art, history, and culture drives her work in photojournalism and cultural anthropology. As a first-generation American, she cherishes the stories passed down through generations, which inspire her to document diverse narratives from around the world. Although she began her career in neurobiology and public health, her passion for international relations and cultural exploration has taken her to live, work and journey to over eighty countries across six continents.Â
A fearless adventurer, Sophia has experienced the world like few others—trekking in Eastern Africa, dog-sledding in the Arctic, sailing the Nile, and hiking through Southeast Asian jungles. Each of these transformative experiences deepens her understanding of the cultures she encounters, enhancing her storytelling abilities. Currently, she co-hosts the PBS travel show America: The Land We Live In, where she shares her insights and adventures with a broader audience.Â
Sophia's work has gained recognition in prestigious publications such as Forbes and National Geographic Traveller and exhibited at Harvard University and the International Center of Photography in New York. As a member of The Explorers Club and Chair of the Breaking Barriers Committee, she remains dedicated to inspiring others. Honoured with the 2025 Distinguished Young Alumna Award from Emma Willard School, Sophia currently resides in New York City and serves on the Tufts University Alumni Council.
