Lucy Qavavauq
Inuit Cultural Educator
Lucy is passionate about her culture and language. She's been a cultural performer, radio host, producer, and journalist, and she's been emceeing for over twenty years.
Lucy grew up on the northern tip of Baffin Island in Arctic Bay and Nanisivik, and she went to high school in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Growing up in Arctic Bay as a small child, where the language was mainly in Inuktitut. In Nanisivik, a former mining town, was the opposite—English was predominantly spoken. In Pond Inlet is where she learned and had more appreciation for her cultural heritage.
Her parents are Elderly Inuit who are unilingual Inuktitut speakers. Her mother, Tagoonak Qavavauq, is a cultural leader in her community where she teaches how to make traditional and contemporary clothing as well as tools. Her father, Lisha Qavavauq, is a descendant of the Tallurutiit/Dundas Harbour relocation.Â
She has lived in various parts of Canada, and she's travelled all the territories and provinces. Her love of people and travel has taken her to beautiful parts of the world. Her passion for her culture and language carries on through as appreciation for other people's way of life.
