Kaylee Baxter
Archaeologist
Kaylee is an Arctic archaeologist specializing in the Paleo-Inuit, ancestral Inuit, and Norse cultures of the eastern Canadian Arctic and Greenland.
Kaylee completed her honours bachelor's in archaeology and anthropology before earning her master's in Arctic archaeology. During her seasons of archaeology fieldwork in Greenland, Kaylee fell in love with the Arctic and its deep cultural history. For Kaylee, a summer digging in the Arctic and hiking the tundra searching for archaeological sites is a summer well spent.Ā
Kaylee has worked as an archaeologist in Greenland, Nunavut, the Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, and her graduate studies focused on the archaeology of Newfoundland and Labrador. Her main research interest is the relationship between archaeology and climate change, both past and present. She specializes in the archaeology of Paleo-Inuit and ancestral Inuit cultures of the eastern Canadian Arctic and Greenland. Kaylee has also researched the history of the Norse settlements in southern Greenland and has excavated at several Norse sites. She holds an avid interest in Arctic paleobotany, paleoecology, and paleoenvironmental studies, which she sees as more pieces of the archaeological "puzzleā of the Arctic.Ā
Originally from Toronto, Kaylee finds herself living further west and north each year, moving between Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and, most recently, the Northwest Territories. In between her fieldwork around Canada and Greenland, Kaylee spends her free time alpine skiing, hiking, camping, and pursuing new and exciting projects that get her back to the Arctic every year.
