Katie Ryder
Researcher-in-Residence
Katie is passionate about birds and loves where that passion has taken her—graduate school, remote islands, and Arctic expeditions!
Originally from New Brunswick, Katie moved to Nova Scotia to study biology at Dalhousie University. During her undergrad, she researched predator-prey dynamics on an island home to at-risk seabirds—a project that led her to pursue a master’s at Acadia University, where she now does similar work under the guidance of Dr. Sarah Gutowsky and Dr. Mark Mallory.Â
Over two field seasons on Country Island — a remote seabird colony in Nova Scotia — Katie’s worked closely with herring gulls, Leach’s storm petrels, and a variety of tern species. She is now thrilled to be aboard this expedition with Adventure Canada to conduct important seabird surveys.Â
When she is not studying birds for her master's thesis, she’s out birding, hiking, and exploring the nature of Nova Scotia. She also enjoys reading, running, and spending time with friends and loved ones.
