Dr. Garry Stenson
Marine Biologist
Garry is a retired scientist who has studied the ecology of Arctic and subarctic marine mammals.
Dr. Garry Stenson has been studying the ecology of Canada’s three oceans for over fifty years. As a senior research scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region, he has become an internationally recognized expert on the ecology of marine mammals in the North Atlantic and adjacent Arctic waters.Â
He has authored or coauthored over 200 scientific papers, addressing questions about the abundance and status of marine mammal populations, how they use their habitat, factors influencing vital rates, and the impact of climate change on marine mammals, particularly seals.Â
Since retiring, he has enjoyed passing on his love of the ocean and ecology to others through the trips he has done with Adventure Canada. He also continues to work with students as an adjunct professor of biology at Memorial University, St. John’s. Â
