Dr. Aaron Spitzer
Historian, Political Scientist
Aaron is a professor of Arctic politics, a polar-history buff, a longtime northern journalist, and a kayak fanatic.
Dr. Aaron John Spitzer is a political scientist, historian, and journalist obsessed with polar places.Â
An Adventure Canada expedition lecturer and guide since 2011—and a resident of Canada’s north and, before that, Alaska, since 1996—he has devoted his life to exploring, learning about, teaching about, and celebrating the world’s cold latitudes.Â
Currently, he is an associate professor of Arctic and Indigenous governance at the University of Bergen, Norway, and an adjunct professor in the Indigenous-governance program at Yukon University in Whitehorse, Canada. Â
Before joining academia, he was an Arctic journalist, having edited Canada’s northernmost paper, Nunatsiaq News; the world’s southernmost paper, Antarctic Sun; the leading paper in “Bush” Alaska, Tundra Drums; and the magazine of Canada’s north, Up Here, which in 2010 was named the country’s best magazine.
